Let’s reminisce about childhood memories… Who doesn’t know them from their childhood? The most delicious Apfelradl in the world! Already hotly desired at that time, when grandma baked them fresh out. Apfelradl are especially good at this time of year, after the apples are freshly picked and taste their juiciest. This Austrian classic will make just about anyone’s mouth water. It’s been a long time since you’ve eaten one? Well, then get to the apple! I’ll whip up a dessert for you that’s a breeze to make and a hit with young and old alike.

This is what you need for the Apfelradl:

  • about 1kg apples
  • 2 eggs
  • 300g plain flour
  • 500 ml milk
  • Pulp of half a vanilla pod (alternatively vanilla sugar)
  • a pinch of salt
  • oil for frying/baking

And it’s that easy:

  1. Mix the eggs, flour, vanilla, salt and milk.
  2. Peel the apples and cut them into 7 millimetre thick slices.
  3. Remove the core with a round cookie cutter.
  4. Dip the apple rings in the flour and milk mixture and fry them out in a pan with oil on both sides so that each side is golden brown and crispy.
  5. Then place the baked apple rings on kitchen roll to drain off any excess fat.

Sprinkle with icing sugar. If you like, you can also roll the baked apple rings in a mixture of cinnamon and sugar. If necessary, eat them right away, because they taste best fresh!
