KLANGSPUREN - ULA SICKLE + ICTUS

Music by Didem Coşkunseven, Alvin Lucier, Pauline Oliveros, Stellan Veloce Between January and March, over three million people took to the streets in Germany to protest against the rise of the far-right AfD. Young people are taking to the streets because they see no other way to persuade decision-makers to adopt climate-friendly policies. Fridays For Future began with school strikes by individual people, some of whom are not even of age - and has developed into a global protest movement. Individuals without money or influence may not have much of an impact on what happens in the world, but en masse they can develop such power that they can bring down entire systems. Holding Present by Ula Sickle and the Brussels-based ensemble Ictus focuses on the transition from individual gestures to powerful collective action: dancers and musicians perform symbolic movements, sounds and gestures that build up to an all-encompassing, high-energy climax - and the audience is increasingly integrated into the dynamic fabric. Unusual instruments play just as important a role in this piece as they do in reality - because protest must always be creative in some way: Aluminium pipes, stones, megaphones, a swinging bull roarer and a modular synthesizer give the music an unusual feel. The performance rehearses, so to speak, the foundations and construction of revolutionary collectivity in the safe space of the theatre.
